Please consider sitting in a new spot today. You will need to partner with someone new for today's activities.
II. Announcements
- Please note: by Wednesday, we will have covered 12 points of reading responses already. If you are behind, get the late work in FAST (a few points will be better than no points) and push yourself to keep up . . . or you will find yourself failing the class by the end of the month!
- New Log-In Procedures: When you click on on article title, you might be selecting a copyrighted text. In that case, you will be taken to an online repository for your reading that requires a password based on copyright/fair use laws. Use your FULL, OFFICIAL John Jay email address (i.e., [email protected] you need to use everything after "@") that you use to access all university systems and your current password. You may be prompted to start an account. If so, click yes. You will need to be logged in to access the materials.
Here is an example of a reading for this week that you will need to access: "Nah, we straight": Black language and America's first black president" (chapter from Articulate While Black: Barack Obama, Language, and Race in the US)
III. Whole Room Check-In
- We will go around the room today before the name game. State your name and the artifact you chose for today (please tell us if this is a video, book, song, etc).
- Prepare your artifact for sharing. If you have a print-based text, plan to give an overview and share a few paragraphs or verses with your colleagues. If you have a video/album/song, cue up the performance to the place that you want your colleague to see (this is especially for those of you with lengthy talks or documentaries).
III. Two Rounds of Gender Justice Sharing
- In the first round, you will share with a partner. Find someone who you have not worked with yet.
- Please use earbuds if you are sharing performances, music, etc. YOU MUST USE EARBUDS. Do not play your device out loud. There are too many people in the room for all devices to play at once.
- In the second round, we will be in larger groups. Share your artifact (and your 250-word statement) with your group. You may have to talk your performance out loud. Again, there will probably still be too many devices to run at once.
- Choose a new facilitator today. As a group, you will write out a collective 3-sentence mission statement (the facilitator will do the writing and keep the group on task). ACT like you are a task force on the issues of your group. Why not? This is how social change happens--- people do not just naturally progress; they are forced to! Make it happen! Carmen will type these mission statements and post to the website. You can add your individual names OR you can come up with a group name.
- Here is a way to start if you get stuck: We are a group of college students at John Jay College passionate about eradicating . . . because . . .
